• SATURN-URANUS SQUARE 17 FEBRUARY 2021

  • “You can’t separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom.” Malcolm X

This will be the first of three upper waning squares between the two planets and it will occur at 7°13’ with Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus.

The other two squares will occur on 15th June (13°06’) when Saturn is retrograde and 24th December (11°05’) when Uranus is retrograde.

The Saturn-Uranus cycle repeats itself approximately every 45 years with the most recent conjunction taking place in the sign of Sagittarius in 1988 followed by the lower waxing square between the years 1998-2001 (5 passes) when Saturn was in Taurus and Uranus in Aquarius – so what was going on in your life then? The opposition took place between 2008-2010 (5 passes) when Saturn was in Virgo and Uranus in Pisces.

A few events that took place during the last square:

Google was founded (Uranus in Aquarius – completely new technology)

Euro currency was born (a new stable currency – Saturn in Taurus)

The dot.com bubble burst (a shake-up of the economy based on technology – Saturn in Taurus – Uranus in Aquarius)

Bush refused to sign the Kyoto Climate Change agreement (Saturn in Taurus wanting to control nature and Uranus making this a thing of the future – establishment refuses change)

Saturn and Uranus are co-rulers of the sign of Aquarius and are rather at odds as far as characteristics go. Saturn is tradition, seriousness, ambition and is often ego-driven, Uranus is sudden and unexpected in its behaviour, tending towards futurism and modernity and has a more humanitarian and altruistic view of the world.

Both are transiting in signs of the Fixed modality, one Air (Aquarius) and the other Earth (Uranus). Squares are aspects that require a solution that is difficult to act upon yet that cannot be delayed.

According to astrologer Bil Tierney “upper square aspects correspond to the sign of Capricorn and its ruler Saturn and stress patterns concerning the upper square result from the conscious pressure of social responsibility and the drive to maintain one’s own boundaries in the social environment is emphasized.”

In the chart for the moment of the square between Saturn and Uranus there is an exalted, slow-moving Moon passing over Uranus. This might suggest the important role of the people in any impending changes which could emerge via sobering (Saturn) news (Mercury Rx in Aquarius) about our future wellbeing (Aquarius). Venus in Aquarius is also very near to an exact square with a debilitated Mars in Taurus and could hint that fighting with feathers is certainly preferable to doing so with swords.

I believe we are all well aware of the social tension occurring worldwide, something will have to give, what might that be?

Will conflicts (Uranus) between the collective (Aquarius) and the authorities (Saturn) result in new (Uranus) rules (Saturn) regarding the basic security (financial) needs (Taurus) of the people (Aquarius)?

Will rebels (Uranus) gain control (Saturn)?

Will technology (Uranus) speed up social (Aquarius) reform (Saturn)?

Will loyal (Taurus) commitment (Saturn) to tradition (Saturn) become impractical (Aquarius) and lead to a cautious (Saturn) reform (Uranus)?

Will our freedom (Uranus) continue to be limited (Saturn) or will we break free (Uranus) from these restrictions (Saturn)?

The possibilities are manifold but the most certain thing is that action in some direction will have to be taken.

“If you do not see light at the end of the tunnel, consider it an opportunity to create an opening yourself, wherever you want.” Ashok Kallarakkal
