• CAPRICORN LUNAR ECLIPSE 5 JULY 2020 (GMT)

  • It’s a repeating theme….

This is the last of this year’s Summer eclipses and will be visible from South/West Europe, much of Africa, much of North America, South America, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Antarctica* see link in the bibliography.

The OOB Moon is in its detriment at 13°37’ Capricorn (antiscion 16°23’ Sagittarius) with its retrograde ruler Saturn just having re-entered the sign.

The Sun is at 13°37’ Cancer in the sign of the Moon and is separating from retrograde Mercury, both planets oppose by sign, but not by degree, the stellium of planets in Capricorn (Moon, Jupiter, Pluto, Saturn), all of which, except Moon, are retrograde and one (Jupiter) is also in its fall. Will the determination (Sun) and the voice (Mercury) of the people (Moon) be heard amidst the roar for more (Jupiter) power (Pluto) from the establishment (Capricorn) and its tyrannical (Pluto) leaders (Saturn)?

Again, by sign, but not yet by degree, Mars, newly in its home sign of Aries, is squaring the Cancer-Capricorn axis, will the outrage manifest as yet more social unrest as the struggles between the demands of the people and the choices of our leaders meet head on? Moon (generally representing the people as a whole) is in detriment in Capricorn and could feel overwhelmed by the establishment.

Retrograde Saturn is especially important in the eclipse chart because it’s on the same degree as the nodes and also on the critical all-or-nothing 29th degree of the sign, definitely a planet to watch and very carefully so since it is now in the sign where Mars finds its exaltation, some leaders may resort to retaliation.

Venus in Gemini is contro-antiscion the Jupiter-Pluto duo, again involving Venusian matters in this Lunar Eclipse (gender, racial, monetary equality – those who have and those who have not –  as well a roller coaster ride in the stock exchanges in those countries affected by the eclipse and will also perhaps affect our own personal likes and dislikes).

Eclipses can be considered as a “spotlight” on the matters of the house axis where they occur in your chart (particularly so if personal planets or angles are involved in the eclipse degrees). It shines its light and brings to our attention those areas of our lives that need to be addressed for some reason. Dealing with these matters, once identified, could lead to a life-changing event in some cases. However, since events under eclipses are often unexpected and sudden it’s not always possible to prepare in advance but having a notion of the matters of the houses interested in the event could give us an inkling as to where the disruption might come from.

Full Moons are also known to be times when things climax, when we decide that enough is enough for certain aspects of our life. Most affected by this eclipse could be those persons with 12-16° of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn).

The last Lunar Eclipse at 14° Capricorn was on July 5th 2001 but of a different Saros series*. What was happening in your life then?

Raven Kaldera in his book “Moon Phase Astrology” calls this moon the “Grandmother’s Moon”.

He continues; “the Grandmother is the head of her family, clan or tribe and she rules all blood relatives and cares for them intensely.

Under this Moon we may feel older, wiser and a little more rigid, it’s the destiny of Capricorn to embody maturity and this Full Moon is the archetype of the Elder in all her fullness.

So, under this Moon we may honour our family elders (both living and dead) and our focus will turn to our close relatives. It’s a time to get organized and to take responsibility also at an emotional level.”

The Sabian symbol for the Moon at 14° Capricorn: “An ancient bas-relief carved in granite remains a witness to a long-forgotten culture.” Indicating the will to unearth, in our culture as well as in any culture, what has permanent value and let go of the non-essentials.

For the antiscion at 17° Sagittarius: “An Easter sunrise service draws a large crowd.” Indicating the culturally stimulated longing for group participation in a process of rebirth.

For the Sun at 14° Cancer: “A very old man facing a vast dark space to the northeast.” Indicating fulfilment in transcending and changeless wisdom.

    “If we have to burn
    If we have to destroy
    Let it be hatred.”

I study astrology at https://horo.io/ and I think that the lunar eclipse falling on the birthday of the USA seems to indicate dark times, however this reading shows that the American experiment could have a rebirth. Americans might decide to become a family again, to ignore that which divided us, and to work toward a more inclusive future. I will be rooting for that.
