LUNAR ECLIPSE IN TAURUS

Another difficult lunation with the added oomph of being a Lunar Eclipse.

The Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse will occur at 27°14’ Taurus (antiscion 2°46’ Leo).

The last lunar eclipse at 28° Taurus took place on the 28^th November 2002. Can you remember what was happening in your inner and/or outer life then?

Again, another lunation chart with a huge emphasis on the Fixed modality (7 planets) and no Fire element and little Air. Stubborn, a good mix between practical and empathic but with little care for the “what next” and no intuition and energy to get there anywhere.

As per the previous New Moon earlier this month, the luminaries form a square to an outer planet, in this case Jupiter (in the previous lunation it was Saturn) which might induce optimism, being able to see the big picture (Jupiter in an Air sign) of social equity (Aquarius). However, the fixity of the signs involved leaves little room for manoeuvre and Sun in Scorpio wants to delve deep and ponder matters over before acting whilst Moon in Taurus concerns itself with how it can keep in its comfort zone as it moves along.

Moon in the late degrees of Taurus is still close to Fixed Star Algol, “losing one’s head” in olden times was a distinct possibility (especially for the court astrologer) now it seems more to mean “not being able to cope or not up to par”. Robson, however, gives this definition to Moon conjunct Algol; “violent death or extreme sickness”. In mundane astrology, the Moon represents the people of a country and since many countries now have an upsurge in Covid cases and deaths due to Covid perhaps Robson’s definition is not too far out even though it was formulated in the early 1920’s. The Moon is also c/parallel Saturn and separating from a trine to Pluto, a Taurus Moon desiring comfort for self could easily become fanatical and convinced of being right whilst the others are wrong, yet stern Saturn wants what’s right for all in the humanitarian sign of Aquarius.

Venus, OOB in Capricorn, and dispositor of the Moon is ruled by Saturn, sextile Mars and parallel the Fixed Star Antares which summed up could make for a very energetic but selfish Venus even more so with its OOB status which lends itself to ruthlessness too but the tight trine to Uranus R in the Venus ruled sign of Taurus could throw a spanner in the works and make it difficult to keep our desires on the planned track.

Mars, the dispositor of the Sun, is also transiting Scorpio (its night-time sign) and is in a separating conjunction with Mercury who is now half-way between Mars and the Sun. Mars is also in a separating opposition to Uranus R in Taurus, another indication of the very unsettled energy we’re all facing at the moment.

Mercury is antiscion Saturn, communications and thoughts run deep and serious around social reform and resolution of problems but the trine from Mercury to Neptune in Pisces could add more than a note of confusion.

Falling on the Taurus-Scorpio axis, 2-8 houses in the traditional zodiac, the Moon-Sun opposition highlights our values vs the values we share with others, peace vs emotional storms, material comfort vs emotional drama etc.

Full Moons (Lunar eclipses occur at Full Moons) put the spotlight on the darker side of life, where we need to question our motivations and recognize if we are coming from a place of love for ourselves (Taurus) or suspicion and jealousy (Scorpio). It poses the question of what needs to be understood and transformed and what needs to be kept versus what we need to let go of. The Taurus-Scorpio axis with the Moon occurring in Taurus means that Scorpio is the dark side with all its trust issues and its penchant for drama and jealousy whilst Taurus indicates that awareness of love and comfort is the way out of Scorpio’s dilemma.

Whilst solar eclipses manifest as external events in our lives, lunar eclipses indicate more intimate, emotional changes which could of course still manifest as external events if the brooding that accompanies our innermost vicissitudes causes changes to our behaviour at an individual level. Such events are in fact brought about by our own thoughts and feelings.

Eclipses can be considered as a “spotlight” on the matters of the house axis where they occur in your chart (particularly so if personal planets or angles are involved in the eclipse degrees). It shines its light and brings to our attention those areas of our lives that need to be addressed for some reason. Dealing with these matters, once identified, could lead to a life-changing event in some cases. However, since events under eclipses are often unexpected and sudden it’s not always possible to prepare in advance but having a notion of the matters of the houses interested in the event could give us inkling as to where the disruption might come from.

Raven Kaldera in his book “Moon Phase Astrology” calls this Full Moon the

“Earth Mother’s Moon”

According to him, it’s a time when we should take care of our body and the physical (not emotional) needs of others. We could ask ourselves on this Moon questions such as: “Am I eating healthily?”, “Do I need a medical check-up?”, “Am I sleeping enough?” “Do I feel good at skin-level with my clothes or does fashion prevail over my comfort?” “Am I getting enough hugs and regular body contact from my loved ones?” On this Moon we need to find the answers to the above questions and fix what is not working.

Most interested in this Lunar Eclipse will be those with planets or angles 25-30° Taurus or Scorpio.

The Sabian symbol for 28° Taurus: “A woman, past her “change of life”, experiences a new love.” Indicating man’s capacity to rise in consciousness and feelings above biological limitations.

For the antiscion at 3° Leo: “A middle-aged woman, her long hair flowing over her shoulders and in a bra-less youthful garment.” Indicating the will to meet the challenge of age in terms of our modern society’s glorification of youth.

For the Sun at 28° Scorpio: “The King of the Fairies approaching his domain.” Indicating the capacity in man to recognise and to pay homage to an integrating Principle at the core of all existence.
