    As if there weren’t too many hiccups already!

    Mercury starts the retrograde period OOB South but remains so only for a few hours since the planet returns in bounds on 10 November. The planet will station retrograde on 9 November at 06°51’ Sagittarius (antiscion 23°09’ Capricorn) and will re-enter the sign of Scorpio on 19 November returning to Sagittarius on 11 December.

    Mercury, ruler of Gemini (collects information about whatever, whenever it can) and Virgo (only interested in information that can be used in a practical way) enters the sign of its detriment. The OOB status will mark a heightening of the Mercurial characteristics, thinking big will be the norm.

    Mercury in the sign of the archer has the tendency to overlook and discard generalised information (Gemini) and practical details (Virgo) placing attention on the bigger picture and thus becoming sloppy as information becomes scattered and unfocussed.

    Mercury in Sagittarius is playful and best suits his prankster fame, I also see it as a “foot in the mouth” position, Sagittarius loves the truth and Mercury here often blurts it out in a very tactless fashion. Mercury is also prone to preaching here but it’s also an excellent placement for travelling and intellectual discourse.

    So, what might a retrograde Mercury in the Fire element involve?

    The late Erin Sullivan summed this up perfectly in her book “Retrograde Planets”:

    “During a Mercury R in the Fire element you may make a lot of haphazard attempts to ‘start something’, a poor substitute for true inspiration. This may well indicate that you are going through a transition of your creative focus in an outward direction…meaning that you will have to learn how to play and how that adds a dimension of creativity to your life. The Fire retrograde will test your ability to live with spontaneous energy and to be more creative with your decisions for change.”

    All in all, it could be quite a disruptive retrograde for many Sagittarians, Geminis, Virgo and Pisceans. Most affected however will be those with planets or angles between 8-0 degrees of the Mutable signs.

    The usual advice is valid, expect delays and disruptions to any journeys, appointments etc and avoid buying any hi-tech equipment if possible as well as double-checking any contracts before signing during the retrograde.

    The Sabian symbol for 7° Sagittarius: “Cupid knocks at the door of a human heart.” Indicating a stirring-up of individual longings for romantic love.

    For the antiscion at 24° Capricorn: “A woman entering a convent.” Indicating total commitment to a transcendental goal.
