engaging, to say the least…The Full Moon at 15°34’ Sagittarius (antiscion 14°26 Capricorn) will also be the first of a series of three eclipses taking place over the next month. Eclipses usually occur in pairs so the fact that there will only be three this time is a rather unusual, but not rare, event. To follow the eclipse path please see link in bibliography.
This eclipse belongs to the Saros series 4 North* which, according to Bernadette Brady, brings restriction, inhibition, expectations and illusions and relates to events that seem to block the individual thus creating misjudgement about his or her own strength or about the situation which arises.
The last eclipse at 14° Sagittarius (not of this present Saros series) occurred in June 2012. What was going on in your life then?
It’s a very enthusiastic Moon so during this short period we may go into overdrive or be physically overwhelmed by the excess of information swirling around us, especially if the Moon touches any planets or angles in our personal chart, and particularly if these are conjunctions or oppositions (in the mutable signs of Sagittarius, Gemini, Virgo and Pisces).
The Moon and Sun opposition forms an exact T-square to Mars transiting in Pisces. All the signs involved are mutable indicating a mentally stressful period when energy is hard to direct and this could lead to psychological burn-out as well as to intense nervous stress.
The opposition between Moon and Sun requires a compromise between information wrapped up in a nice parcel (Gemini Sun conjunct retrograde Venus) and the quest for knowledge obtained only by sifting out the real truth (Moon in Sagittarius). This compromise should be resolved through Mars which forms the apex planet of the aforesaid T-square but it’s more likely that the Martian drive will only scatter the information bringing it out on a different experiential level in a less real and more outer-worldly manner (Mars conjunct Neptune both in Pisces) than that envisaged by the rational and intuitive signs ruling the luminaries. This might also include a tendency of the Martian energy to express itself physically as disseminated and perhaps extreme violence (Mars is in its own triplicity in Pisces so quite able to express itself adequately if not aptly).
The ruler of the Moon is Jupiter, still retrograde in Capricorn, not rendering its best self and not far away from its second conjunction to Pluto (30th June) a powerhouse duo, far from being dormant, that might not bode well giving power to the plutocracies.
Mercury, dispositor of the Sun in this lunation and ruled by the Moon, is just separating from a sextile to Uranus in Taurus, the possibility that unexpected and unconventional ideas might bring sudden solutions to practical problems could seem like manna from Heaven providing our mood is stable enough for us to catch on them.
Whilst Solar eclipses manifest as external events in our lives, Lunar eclipses indicate more intimate, emotional changes which could of course still manifest as external events if the brooding that accompanies our innermost vicissitudes causes changes to our behaviour at an individual level. Such events are in fact brought about by behavioural modifications caused by our own thoughts and feelings.
Personally, I consider only the conjunction and opposition aspects to eclipses (the square only if the Sun or Moon is affected in your chart) and orbs should be less than 2°. Most affected therefore will be those with planets or angles between 13-17° of the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces).
Eclipses can be considered as a “spotlight” on the matters of the house axis where they occur in your chart (particularly so if personal planets or angles are involved in the eclipse degrees). It shines its light and brings to our attention those areas of our lives that need to be addressed for some reason. Dealing with these matters, once identified, could lead to a life-changing event in some cases. However, since events under eclipses are often unexpected and sudden it’s not always possible to prepare in advance but having a notion of the matters of the houses interested in the event could give us an inkling as to where the disruption might come from.
According to Raven Kaldera in his book “Moon Phase Astrology”1 this moon is known as the “Priest’s Moon”. It’s a Moon that invites us to think about our backgrounds and the beliefs we hold, not necessarily our religious beliefs, and if we are ready, able, and willing to question them.
This Moon will also be operating on the 3rd-9th (Gemini-Sagittarius) axis of the traditional horoscope, therefore it will have a flavour of the “how I think” versus “how others think” dilemma as well as the reason versus intuition, knowledge versus wisdom etc.
Full Moons are also known to be times when things climax, when we decide that enough is enough for certain aspects of our life. This is certainly more so when the Full Moon closely aspects any personal planets or angles in your chart and also depends on the houses involved.
The Sabian symbol for the Moon at 16° Sagittarius: “Sea gulls fly around the ship in expectation of food.” Indicating the easily acquired dependence of psychic desires upon the stimulation of social circumstances.
For the antiscion at 15° Capricorn: “In a hospital, the children’s ward is filled with toys.” Indicating the responsibility of society to ensure the welfare and total health of the new generation.
For the Sun at 16° Gemini: “A woman activist in an emotional speech dramatizing her cause.” Indicating a passionate response to a deeply felt new experience.
