  • New Moon in AriesSOLAR ECLIPSE IN ARIES 8 APRIL 2024

There will be a New Moon and a total Solar Eclipse at 19°24’ of Aries (antiscion 10°36’ Virgo), a Cardinal, Fire sign on the 8th of April. The Sun, on its exaltation degree in Aries, is particularly strong.

This eclipse path intersects the path of the 2017 great American eclipse which took place on the 21st August at 29° Leo, also in a Fire sign just like the upcoming one. Around that time there were huge floods in the Miami area due to Tropical Storm Emily, US congress pushed through sanctions against Russia, President Trump announced a new immigration plan and the Women’s #metoo movement also began.

The path of the eclipse initiates in Mexico, entering the United States in Texas, and travelling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse. The eclipse will enter Canada in Southern Ontario, and continue through Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Cape Breton. The eclipse will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada (1).

All the planets in the eclipse chart are contained within 01° Aquarius (Pluto) and 21° Taurus (Uranus), the planets are square by sign but not by degree nevertheless when these two planets are in harsh aspect to each other we are to expect a metamorphosis that could bring sudden, deep-reaching changes to many sectors of our lives if our chart is directly involved in the lunation/eclipse degrees.

The dispositor of the lunation is Mars in Pisces conjunct Saturn, a frustrating combination in which the impulsiveness of Mars may have a slightly upper hand thanks to the planet being in its own triplicity in the Water signs, where, however, too much steam produced by the effect of a hot and dry planet being immersed in a cold and moist sign could force a situation that really needed sitting on a little more.

Jupiter, ruler of Pisces, is applying a conjunction to Uranus, again a volatile combination that might only add to a predisposition, by the chart as a whole, of rash behaviour.

New Moons (Solar eclipses occur only at New Moons) are times when we are invited to set our intentions for the month to come regarding that area of our life which the Moon is illuminating in this lunar phase.

This Solar Eclipse, like the Lunar Eclipse 15 days ago, belongs to the 8 North Saros series and is a North Node eclipse, which are considered particularly fortunate and according to Bernadette Brady this particular series of eclipse is harbinger of inventiveness and flashes of genius as well as the need to be free.

The last eclipse at 19° Aries was in April 2005 but of a different Saros series.

What was happening in your life then?

Although of different Saros* series, eclipses occur at similar degrees of the same sign in 19-year cycles as they move in a retrograde motion through the zodiac. Thus, they have effect on the same house polarity in your natal chart (or on any personal planets or angles in Aries/Libra that fall in a 2°30’ orb for conjunctions, 2° for oppositions, allowing 5° if Sun or Moon is involved).

The effects of eclipses can be quite unpredictable (a “what-the-heck effect”), sometimes stressing emotions or bringing unexpected events into our lives, at other times they can go seemingly unnoticed. Some astrologers say that the effects of the eclipses manifest for as long as the duration of the eclipse itself, transmuting the minutes of the duration into days.

Events connected to an eclipse can manifest before or after the event or when a following New Moon or other planet aspects the eclipse degree. You may notice events connected with the eclipse around the time Mars will be at 19° Aries on the 26th May.

This New Moon, as the first sign in the zodiac, symbolizes the starting point of a new journey, a rise to the next level. We need to leave our comfort zone and discover new pathways and destinations.

New Moons are great times to set your intentions about new projects to undertake during the month to come so try to take some quiet time to think about what you would like or need to change in the matters of the house where the New Moon takes place in your chart.

The New Moon falls on the 1-7th axis (Aries-Libra) in traditional astrology: the I vs us, me vs you, assertion vs compromise, independence vs relationship etc. Most affected by this New Moon are those people with planets or angles in the Cardinal signs of Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn.

Raven Kaldera in his book “Moon Phase Astrology” calls this “The Infant’s” Moon and he compares it to the “Fool” in the tarot deck, an innocent being eager to discover the world. He states that on this Moon “we begin things, we revisit our relationship with that state of utter faith and excitement of the grand unknown. Have we become too cynical for that kind of trust?”

Linda Goodman, author of the famous book “Sun Signs”, is said to have commented this New Moon “how appropriate that the archetypical Infant of Aries was protected by the seasoned and powerful Warrior of Mars”.

The Sabian symbol for 20° Aries: “A young girl feeding birds in winter.” Indicating overcoming crises through compassion.

For the antiscion at 11° Virgo: “In her baby a mother sees her deep longing for a son answered.” Indicating Spirit’s answer to the vital needs of whatever became individualised out of its infinite ocean of potentialities.

“Tough times don’t last. Tough people do.” Julian Edelman
