FULL MOON AND TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE IN SCORPIO
On May 15-16th (depending upon where you are in the world) there will be a Full Moon at 25°17’ (antiscion 4°43’ Aquarius) in the Fixed, Water sign of Scorpio.
At last, after many, many months, we have a lunation where both the Elements and the Modalities are well balanced.
Both the Moon and the Sun form a Fixed modality T-square to Saturn. The Establishment wants lasting security and once more may try to obtain this through exercising tight controls over people and situations. However, the luminaries also both make harmonious aspects to the Mars-Neptune (Mars is dispositor of this lunation) conjunction in Pisces (Moon trine, Sun sextile) inducing many to believe that we are guided by a higher power (Neptune) in everything we do (Mars) instead of being able to act (Mars) with uncanny certainty (Neptune) as if protected by a Guardian Angel of types (Jupiter newly entered in Aries). The sextile of the Moon and the trine of the Sun to Pluto may also be an opportunity to empower ourselves.
Full Moons are also known to be times when things climax, when we decide that enough is enough for certain aspects of our life because we avert an intensified conflict between two major areas of our life and we need to find a way to honour both.
They shine a light on the area that is “hidden” and in this case, in traditional astrology, all matters concerning the 8th house and the sign of Scorpio. The axis involved is the 2nd-8th and involves questions such as: the constructor vs the saboteur, security vs temptation, calm vs emotional crisis etc. Taurus is the first Earth sign and he wants to build, Scorpio is the second Water sign and wants to destroy/purify in the attempt to understand and regenerate.
Author Raven Kaldera in his book “Moon Phase Astrology” calls this Full Moon the “Priestess’s Moon” he continues in his explanation “the Priestess has been down to the darkness and up again into the light. She has dragged herself down the path of deep introspection and learned that the best way out is with the aid of Deeper Powers” On this Full Moon he recommends spirituality and meditation and failing that to surround yourself with Nature and contemplate the beauty of it all.
I suggest that we use the light of this Full Moon to illuminate where we can create more comfort and ease in our lives relinquishing those things (or persons) that no longer make us smile. Let’s search for our own personal pot of gold by digging deep inside ourselves to find what we really need in life to feel good.
The Eclipse
This Full Moon however is also a total Lunar eclipse, visible at least partially in: South/West Europe, South/West Asia, Africa, Much of North America, South America, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Antarctica.
The last lunar eclipse* at 25° Scorpio was on May 16th 2003
What was happening in your life then?
Whilst Solar eclipses manifest as external events in our lives, Lunar eclipses indicate more intimate, emotional changes which could of course still manifest as external events if the brooding that accompanies our innermost vicissitudes causes changes to our behaviour at an individual level. Such events are in fact brought about by behavioural modifications caused by our own thoughts and feelings.
Personally, I consider only the conjunction and opposition aspects to eclipses (the square only if the Sun or Moon is affected in your chart) and orbs should be less than 2°. Most affected therefore will be those with planets or angles between 23-27° of the fixed signs (Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius, Taurus).
Similar to the preceding Solar Eclipse in April this eclipse belongs to the Saros series 6 North* which Bernadette Brady describes as follows: “This eclipse family is concerned with the individual’s relationship to father figures, authority figures or the need to take responsibility and control.”
Eclipses can be considered as a “spotlight” on the matters of the house axis where they occur in your chart (particularly so if personal planets or angles are involved in the eclipse degrees). It shines its light and brings to our attention those areas of our lives that need to be addressed for some reason. Dealing with these matters, once identified, could lead to a life-changing event in some cases. However, since events under eclipses are often unexpected and sudden it’s not always possible to prepare in advance but having a notion of the matters of the houses interested in the event could give us an inkling as to where the disruption might come from.
The Sabian symbol for the Moon at 26° Scorpio: “American Indians making camp after moving into new territory.” Indicating the ability to adjust swiftly to a new situation by tuning in to its requirements.
For the antiscion at 5° Aquarius: “A child is being seen being born out of an egg.” Indicating the mergence of new mutations according to the great rhythms of the cosmos.
For the Sun at 26° Taurus “A Spanish gallant serenades his beloved.” Indicating the ritualisation of individual desires.
“Even in the loneliest moments I have been there for myself.” Sanober Khan
