FULL MOON AND LUNAR ECLIPSE IN VIRGO
“We often confuse what we wish for with what is.” Neil Gaiman
There will be a total Lunar Eclipse at 23°57’ Virgo (antiscion 06°03’ Aries) on the 13-14 March (depending in which part of the world you live in).
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align so that the Moon passes into Earth’s shadow. In a total lunar eclipse, the entire Moon falls within the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, called the umbra. When the Moon is within the umbra, it appears red orange. Lunar eclipses are sometimes called “Blood Moons” because of this phenomenon.
While the eclipse will be visible worldwide at the same universal time, the best views will be in North and South America. Observers in parts of Europe may catch a glimpse at moonset, while those in East Asia will see it as the moon rises. The point of greatest eclipse falls over the Pacific Ocean, making it an unforgettable sight for skywatchers across the Americas.
Another lunation chart with a heavy emphasis on the Water element and the Mutable modality, perhaps we are adjusting inappropriately as feelings and alliances are in a continuous state of flux.
Mercury, dispositor of this peregrine Moon, is stationary in fiery Aries and separating from a conjunction to a retrograde Venus which is on the antiscion point of the Moon. People (Moon) in general seem to be too opinionated (Mercury in Aries) and egocentric (Venus in Aries) and our leaders (Sun) seem to be confused (Pisces) about how to command respect (Sun conjunct Saturn) and set down rules (Saturn) which don’t lead to further chaos (Neptune conjunct NN). Moon is applying a trine aspect to Uranus and Sun is sextile Uranus, the possibility of disruptions and sudden outbursts on either side of the fence is not to be excluded but these may be held in check somewhat by the applying trine from OOB Mars to Saturn which will hopefully curb rash behaviour particularly from the leaders since Sun is conjunct Saturn.
Jupiter, in detriment in Gemini, and dispositor of the Sun, looks on as a lonely spectator, neither making nor receiving (Ptolemaic) aspects from other planets and as such, of little help to the Sun which is peregrine and thus weak.
Whilst Solar eclipses manifest as external events in our lives, Lunar eclipses indicate more intimate, emotional changes which could of course still manifest as external events if the brooding that accompanies our innermost vicissitudes causes changes to our behaviour at an individual level. Such events are in fact brought about by behavioural changes caused by our own thoughts and feelings.
Personally, I consider only the conjunction and opposition aspects to eclipses (the square only if the Sun or Moon is affected in your chart) and orbs should be less than 2°, slightly larger if Sun or Moon are affected in your chart. Most involved therefore will be those with planets or angles in Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces between 21-27°.
This eclipse belongs to the Saros series 9 New North* which according to Bernadette Brady is a very physically expressive series. Since accidents and violence might be part of its effects Brady advises not to hide away but to undertake some kind physical activity keeping an eye to safety.
The last time there was a Lunar eclipse near this degree (24° Virgo) was in March 2006 but of a different Saros series.
What was going on in your life then?
Eclipses can be considered as a “spotlight” on the matters of the house axis where they occur in your chart (particularly so if personal planets or angles are involved in the eclipse degrees). It shines its light and brings to our attention those areas of our lives that need to be addressed for some reason. Dealing with these matters, once identified, could lead to a life-changing event in some cases. However, since events under eclipses are often unexpected and sudden it’s not always possible to prepare in advance but having a notion of the matters of the houses interested in the event could give us an inkling as to where the disruption might come from.
Eclipses also have a stronger effect on tides, tectonic plate movement and our moods of course and these manifestations might be felt in the days coming up to the event.
Virgo and the 6th house, in modern astrology, respect the physical body and thus fitness regimes and diets which are involved in the healthy functioning of our bodies, it also includes our daily routine and work among other meanings. Its shadow side however tends to treat the body as a slave, pushing it to its physical limits until injury or illness force us to pay attention. Virgo is very discriminating and delights in helping people, its shadow part tends to judge and falls into servitude by keeping itself over-occupied in the hope of escaping feelings of powerlessness and loneliness. In traditional astrology however the 6th house represents any person “who serves us” such as people who work in our homes including craftsmen, it also represents ill-health and unpleasantness among other things.
Full Moons are also known to be times when things climax, when we decide that enough is enough for certain aspects of our life because we avert an intensified conflict between two major areas of our life and we need to find a way to honour both. They shine a light on the area that is “hidden” and in this case all matters concerning the 6th house and the sign of Virgo.
In his book “Moon Phase Astrology”, author Raven Kaldera calls this Virgo Moon phase the “Spinner’s Moon” he or she who spins the thread of life for each and every one of us. He suggests we use this time to count our web of obligations, whom we owe, who owes us and how we feel about these obligations. And, moreover, who will be there to catch us should we fall? For him, this is also a good time to render service to others in a selfless way.
The Sabian symbol for the Moon at 24° Virgo: “Mary and her little lamb.” Indicating the need to keep a vibrant and pure simplicity at the core on one’s being as one meets the many tests of existence.
For the antiscion of the Moon at 07° Aries: “A man succeeds in expressing himself simultaneously in two realms.” Indicating the first realisation of the dual nature of man and of the possibilities it implies.
For the Sun at 24° Pisces: “On a small island surrounded by the vast expanse of the sea, people are seen living in close interaction.” Indicating the need to consciously accept one’s own personal limitations in order to concentrate one’s energy and to live a centred and fulfilled life.
